Do You Know Where You're Going?

Do you sometimes wonder how you started out in one place
going in a certain direction,
or so you thought,
and ended up somewhere else entirely?
I don't think this happens to all of us.
But it certainly happens to many of us.
I've been in the 'people' business for many years.
And I can tell you some people really know their direction.
They make plans
and with G-d's help they get  there.
More or less.
I was never that kind of person.
I kind of wing it.
But as I get older
I wish
I was a planning kind of person.
Which would mean
you make choices
and stick with them.
You continue to make choices
to support your original choices
and that's how you get where you want to go.
Its not a foolproof plan
but I've seen it work.
When I create
I follow both concepts.
Sometimes I plan.
Like in this sweater I made for my son.
Wonderful patten.
HERRINGBONE CARDIGAN.
I had to follow every stitch.
And it was so worth it.

I added the hat and scarf.
How could I not?
Want to keep him warm.

He decided to share with his son!

Then I go to this craziness.
Trying to make some art.
Not exactly any rules for me here.
so I start with this:

Which is actually not bad.
But I couldn't leave well enough alone.
so I did more 'patchking'
and ended up with this.

Interesting.
But not exactly what I hoped for.
Oh well.
I can always try again.

And here is a cardigan I started ages ago.
Finally made something for myself.
Yarn was given to me by a dear friend.
Last Sunday I forced myself to figure out how I would bring some excitement to the design.
I hate leaving unfinished projects before I start a new one.
This was in a bag for at least six months.
I found this wonderful leftover piece of lace
and 5 hours later
voila!
So very happy with the result.

An example of no plan
that went right!
So there you have it.
Put one foot in front of the other
and
GO!
“My direction? Anywhere. Because one is always nearer by not keeping still.”

“Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.” ― George Bernard Shaw

Last week I was asked to do an art/craft class with the girls from Chaya Mushka Seminary in Hallandale.
Now I'm no artist.
But I love making things.
Scrap booking  is my way of  expressing my artsy side.
Lots of people know this about me.
Oftentimes someone will express that I am 'talented'.
I always tell them it's not 'talent'.
It's 'interest'.
I'm interested.
Therefore I am talented.
Which means that anyone can express themselves in an artistic fasion.
Art is subjective.
It expressive the mood, the passion, the dream, the vision
of the artist.
Is there any one way to do that?
As many people as there are on this earth
is as many different ways there are to express art.

  • I know an artist who painted a canvas black, added a white dot in the center and called it art - he sold the canvas for $35,000.00 to an idiot who thought it was an original concept. To him, that is art. To me, it's a joke!
A graffiti artist paints his masterpiece on your garage door. To him and people that admire graffiti, he's and artist. To you, he's a vandal. That isn't art on your garage door in your mind, it's just a bunch of  paint that you now have to scrub off.

Which brings me to my point.
All of you could make art.
    Try it.
    It's a blast!

I started with old sheets of music and sprayed them with ink.
    (BIG MESS)
Them I took a blank canvas.
covered it with torn pieces of inked paper
    lots of Mod Podge.
used white cardstock and wrote a quote.
    Voila!
    ART!
The girls had the best time.

Here are the ones I made as samples.

So many ways to express oneself.
(this message is to my kids:
if you have a favorite quote
   let me know
I will make it for you!!!)
If you are not my kid
MAKE IT YOURSELF!
Well at least try.
E-mail me with any questions you may have.

I will help you get your artistic inner self going.
I know you have it in you...

"The joy is in creating, not maintaining."

If I wouldn't be afraid of my family, I would use (abuse) every surface in the house with a DIY project.
I love the sudden spark of an idea that worms it's way into my mind.
My chair was the perfect place to start.
No harm done.
Now we move on to the kitchen area.
I showed you the 'before' last week.
Here we are with the 'after.'
I am thrilled at how they came out.
Using old chairs to practice on is a great idea.
I learned a few things that gives me confidence to try this on any upholstery.
Mainly though I learned that you could make something old look practically new.
If you don't look too close!

I bought the Fabric Medium in Michaels.
They did not even know they had it or what it was.
I, the computer savvy girl that I am, looked up the info before I got there.
This old gal taught them something new!

I used my pillow for inspiration.
Isn't this color fabulous?
I am extremely happy with the results.
Can I inspire any of you to take a chance with your old furniture?
Bottom line - Don't be afraid to try something you've never done before.
Be informed and be prepared.
Then let your creativity take over.
